Puppy Adoption

by Coach Lilly

Adopting a puppy is a great idea around the holiday season. It can be the perfect family gift that will keep on giving. I actually got my wife a puppy for Christmas 6 years ago, and to this day she tells me that he was the best gift I’ve ever given her!
And if this doesn’t go without saying… make sure the recipient of this wonderful gift is ready and willing to care and love this dog for the next 15 years.

So you’re ready to adopt, for either yourself or a family member/friend. But what kind of guidelines should you follow in regards to finding the perfect puppy? You can start with these below:

-DO NOT purchase from pet stores (aka puppy mills). These are not healthy places to buy a puppy from. They excessively breed and overpopulate the dog population, they take the puppies away from their mother’s too early, they can provide un-hospitable environments, and they can even “put down” the puppies that do not sell by a certain number of weeks/months.

-DO NOT purchase a dog over the internet. Many of these dogs are shipped in large trucks across the country, which can lead to excessive and unnecessary trauma and stress for a puppy at such a young age. Additionally, many of these puppies also come from puppy mill factories.

-DO rescue a dog from an animal shelter. Animal shelter adoptions are a great way to save a dog’s life. Approximately 2/3’s of the dogs from shelters are mixed breeds (which in my opinion usually produce the most personable and loving dogs)

-DO locate a rescue group in your area for a specific breed, if you do have a specific breed in mind.

-DO make sure to bring all household members to meet and get to know the puppy prior to making an official adoption. All people and puppies have different personalities, and you want to make sure that the puppy you choose will be a good fit for the home that he/she will be brought in to.

These are just a few helpful hints for those of you who are preparing to adopt a puppy this holiday season. As always, there are many more factors to consider, and you should do as much research as possible to make sure you adopt the perfect puppy in the most responsible manner possible!
